This course provides a grounding in key approaches to urban studies and sustainable development, bringing together current knowledge and best practices to explore how cities and everyday urban living might become more sustainable.
Sustainable cities will become increasingly central to the environmental, economic, social, and civic challenges and opportunities of the future. The course investigates the evolution of cities, and growing concerns for more sustainable forms of living, and the opportunities they may provide. Global issues of climate change will be considered alongside more local issues of housing, essential services, transport, and emerging technologies.
In this course, students will be encouraged to reflect on their own local experiences from all over the world, and to consider key themes of urban development across a range of subject areas. Individually and collectively, we will explore how sustainability can be a crucial framework for responding to environmental, economic, and social challenges in cities today and tomorrow.
This course is part of a bundle of three complementary but independent online courses, additionally including Cities in the Global South and Place, Community and Urban Design.
